Medical Director: Paramedic Dismissal

The Ontario Divisional Court in, Scheerer v. Waldbillig, 2006 CanLII 6460 (ON S.C.D.C.), recently examined the issue of the control a medical director has over paramedic conduct and the paramedic’s practice and service delivery. The decision deals with some interesting issues concerning the review of the medical director’s powers and ability to direct paramedic personnel. Another case, Calgary (City of) v. Paramedic X, 1998 ABCA 411, dealing with these issues was heard by the Alberta Court of Appeal quite some time ago. While both cases deal with slightly different questions, Scheerer and Paramedic X come to essentailly the same conclusions.
